Why Volunteer with ENGin?
-
Make an impact without leaving home: ENGin offers a unique opportunity to make a difference in a Ukrainian's life, all from your laptop or phone.
-
Create your own schedule: It can be tough to fit volunteering into a busy schedule! ENGin offers volunteers maximum flexibility: you decide when to schedule speaking sessions with your student.
-
Connect with people across the globe: The opportunity for intercultural exchange is one of the best aspects of our program. Learn about a new culture and share stories about your own life.
-
Get valuable one-on-one tutoring experience: With resources and support from our team, you'll gain valuable skills such as asking good questions and forming a strong working relationship.
Am I Eligible?
ENGin has 3 main criteria for volunteers:
-
Age: You should be at least14 years old.
-
English fluency: Volunteers should be native English speakers or fluent in English (English level of C1-C2).
-
Commitment: Volunteers should be ready to dedicate 1 hour a week to ENGin for at least 10-12 weeks. If you're looking for more hours, we can accommodate that too!
You don't need teaching experience to volunteer with ENGin. Our learners have all studied English grammar and vocabulary and can carry on a conversation. Volunteers are not expected to prepare or deliver formal lessons - rather, they chat informally with their buddies to help them practice and improve their spoken English. However, if you are a skilled English tutor or teacher, we would be honored to have your professional expertise as well!
Note: Due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, we are not able to accept applications from volunteers currently located on the territory of Russia, Belarus, or occupied Crimea. We also cannot accept volunteers who deny or justify Russian aggression, oppose Ukraine's independence and full territorial integrity, or support the myth of "brotherly nations".
What is the ENGin volunteer experience like?
MEET YOUR MATCH
After a short application process, our team will pair you up with a Ukrainian student. We consider your preferences (age, gender, etc), your interests, and your availability to find the right match.
SCHEDULE SESSIONS
You'll reach out to your student to set up a mutually convenient time for your speaking sessions. Some volunteers schedule one longer session per week (60 minutes); others opt for two shorter sessions (30 minutes each).
START CHATTING
All of our students have studied English, so you don't have to worry about preparing lessons or reviewing grammar rules - just chat about school or work, the latest news stories, favorite books and movies, holiday plans, or anything else that's on your mind.
ACCESS ENGin RESOURCES
Throughout your ENGin experience, you can contact our team at any time for help or advice. We will also share topic ideas, tips for working with international students, potential session formats, and more.
How to Become an ENGin Volunteer
Step 1: Application form (10-15 minutes).
Please fill out our volunteer application on our new online platform. This short form will help us understand your background and match you with a student.
Step 2: Interview (10-15 minutes)
Once we receive your application, you will be asked to schedule a 15-minute video call on the platform to provide more details about volunteering with ENGin and answer any questions.
Step 3: Program Agreement
Volunteers who successfully pass the interview will be asked complete our program agreement by logging into their ENGin account at app.enginprogram.org.
Step 4: Training and Quiz (75-90 minutes)
Before being matched with a student, volunteers must complete a training (synchronous and asynchronous options available) and pass a short online quiz.
