Blending Cultures and Dreams: Kateryna Milovanova’s Story with ENGin

ENGin student Kateryna Milovanova holds art workshops for Ukrainian and local kids in the Carlisle community.

Kateryna Milovanova is a name that has captured the hearts of both the Ukrainian and local communities in Carlisle, England. An award-winning artist and interior designer, Kateryna’s journey from Ukraine to the UK is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of community.


After evacuating from Ukraine in 2022, Kateryna relocated to Carlisle, where she has continued to thrive. Through the ENGin program, Kateryna has been working to improve her English, empowering her both professionally and personally. ENGin volunteer has been instrumental in helping her refine her business English, enabling her to succeed in her career and engage more deeply with her community.


Kateryna recently hosted a heartwarming art masterclass for local and Ukrainian children at New Waterton Hall in Carlisle. The session began with a traditional Ukrainian carol and unfolded into an afternoon of creativity and connection. Guided by Kateryna, the children painted festive scenes inspired by their dreams and wishes, illustrating the joy in simple moments like a peaceful sky and the anticipation of holidays.

The event wasn’t just about painting; it was a celebration of culture. Attendees enjoyed a table filled with Ukrainian dishes, including kutia, a traditional grain dish with honey, central to Ukrainian festive traditions.


While art has been a constant in her life, Kateryna has also found success as an interior designer. She works at the Unwin Jones Partnership in Carlisle, designing luxury hotel interiors around the world. Inspired by the Lake District, her landscape series has been internationally celebrated, showcasing her ability to find beauty in new surroundings.


Kateryna is now preparing to launch her own commercial art business, a dream made possible with the confidence and connections fostered through ENGin.


Kateryna shared, “We are so grateful for the people of Carlisle taking us to their hearts and helping us learn your language. The children, especially, have adapted to speaking English so easily. It’s inspiring to watch.”

Her story is a powerful reminder of how language and community can transform lives, opening doors to new opportunities and deeper connections.
