You can practice English conversation online in three ways: with a live partner (a volunteer, a language exchange partner, or a conversation club), on your own (shadowing videos, recording yourself, talking to AI), or alongside a course. The right choice depends on your level: A1–A2 learners need ready-made phrases and a patient partner, while B1+ learners need regular free-flowing conversations

Yulia treated English as a key to new worlds long before she ever thought of it as a skill to study. Books, vlogs, and podcasts filled her free time for years, and three months ago, weekly conversations with her ENGin volunteer from New Zealand became the next chapter in that journey. In her own words, here's how it started

English gives a veteran concrete tools for returning to civilian life: access to requalification programs, confidence at an interview with an internationally funded company, the ability to study or intern abroad. This isn't a skill for someday — it already works at the stage of looking for a first civilian job or a new profession after service.

To start learning English from scratch, an adult should combine a minimum of basic vocabulary (300–500 of the most common words) with regular speaking practice right from the start — grammar and isolated words rarely turn into real conversational confidence without speaking practice. Emiliia Tokar is an English teacher and ENGin student who joined the ENGin for Educators program. Below, she shares what happened after she met her volunteer and where that connection took her.

Major Serhii "Phoenix" Halhan of the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade has worn many roles: a soldier, a survivor, a drone instructor, a fundraiser, and — since December last year — an ENGin student through the ENGin for Defenders program, which connects Ukrainian military personnel and veterans with English-speaking volunteers for free weekly conversation practice. What follows is that story, told in his own words.

On August 25, 2021, Olha Vasheniuk received an email with the subject line: "ENGin: Meet Your Match!" She didn't know it then, but that message would mark the beginning of a journey that would take her far beyond conversational English — all the way to a career connecting Ukrainian professionals with American startups. This is her story.

When Vita first stumbled across ENGin online, she wasn't even looking for it. She was searching for something else entirely when the program appeared on her screen. She almost scrolled past it until she realized her friend was already part of it.

When I first joined ENGin Communities, I was looking for more than just a place to practise English — I was searching for kindred spirits within an English-speaking community. What I found exceeded my expectations: a warm, vibrant space where genuine connections are formed around shared passions and values. The Women Empowerment Community was where that journey truly began.

Kelley Peel remembers the moment clearly when she was sitting at home in West Michigan, scrolling through the news and seeing another headline about Ukraine, another image of a family saying goodbye at a train station, another story of a life interrupted and a home destroyed. She couldn't look away, but she also couldn't sit still. So she asked herself: "What can a normal person do for Ukraine?"

At ENGin, learning English often becomes more than just improving language skills — it turns into a journey of self-discovery. In this story, Daryna shares how joining our Psychology Community helped her connect her curiosity about the human mind with meaningful conversations in English.

Every Wednesday morning, I get my jolt of optimism from a perhaps unexpected source. It comes from a Ukrainian woman based outside Kyiv. At 9:00 a.m. EST for me and 4:00 p.m. EEST for her, we speak for an hour. Ostensibly, we are working. Several months ago, we each signed on with ENGin to do that very thing: talk.

At ENGin, we believe the most powerful stories often begin with a simple conversation and sometimes, a photo captures that story better than words ever could. That’s why we launched the ENGin Photo Contest 2025: to give our students a space to show what ENGin looks like through their own eyes.

For ENGin student Vadym, English became something much deeper — a path to healing, a way to honor a fallen friend, and a bridge to global connection during the darkest time of his life. This is a story about friendship, loss, resilience, and the invisible threads that tie us together across countries, languages, and generations.

What started as a language exchange became something much more enduring: a friendship built on respect, shared learning, and a sense of mutual purpose.
